The obligation to accept electronic money is now law: including via digital wallets and payment apps

Starting today, with the conversion into law of Law Decree 63/2026 "Carburanti-ter", the obligation to accept electronic payments extends to include at least one electronic money instrument (digital wallets and payment apps). A regulatory shift that affects all merchants, and one Satispay has been anticipating since 2015.

Instant activation, no fixed costs

Satispay anticipated this shift. Since 2015, it has made digital payments accessible to everyone: it works with any bank and any device already in use, including smartphones, tablets, computers or cash registers, with no dedicated POS, no new hardware, no activation fees or monthly charges. Takings are credited the following day.

Any business can activate Satispay immediately and be instantly compliant with the new regulation.

Alberto Dalmasso, Co-Founder and CEO of Satispay

"When we entered the market, also thanks to the Payment Services Directive, the institutions' objective of fostering greater competition and encouraging the emergence of European champions was clear to us. Over these years, we have helped build a new culture of electronic payment in Italy, and created one of the most widespread alternative networks in Europe. Today, with electronic money becoming mandatory, a decisive step is being taken, in line with the original spirit of the European directive, which will bring greater competition and better services for merchants and consumers.

For many merchants, a new obligation may feel like a burden: our commitment is to turn it into an opportunity. That is why from September we are returning to zero commissions below €10, because we believe in local commerce and want to support those who handle frequent small payments: the café, the newsstand and the neighbourhood shop. These are businesses we have always seen as the beating heart of our cities, and which we will continue to support alongside our own growth."

Zero commissions below €10 from September

Satispay's new fee model provides for zero commissions on transactions below €10, and an improvement on transactions of €10 and above, with a commission falling to 0.95%. Special conditions will continue to apply to tobacconists, petrol stations and newsagents, who operate in sectors with tighter margins and whose core business is the sale of government-monopoly goods.

Satispay will continue its dialogue with the main trade associations to define even more favourable conditions for their affiliated merchants.
